Title of Thesis: SPATIAL ECOLOGY OF BLUE CRAB (CALLINECTES SAPIDUS) IN CHESAPEAKE BAY Olaf P. Jensen, MS, 2004 Thesis Directed By: Professor Thomas J. Miller, Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Science Department Spatial heterogeneity is a striking feature of the blue crab life history and fisheries in Chesapeake Bay. However, a quantitative assessment of their spatial distribution and the factors controlling it has been lacking. Based on 13 years of data from a baywide winter dredge survey, geostatistical and two-stage generalized additive models (GAMs) are used to characterize blue crab distributions and investigate environmental factors responsible for the distribution of mature females, respectively. A landscape-based distance metric, the “Lowest-Cost Path” (LCP) distance, is developed as an alternative to Euclidean distance for kriging in estuaries. Estimates of variogram parameters differed significantly between the two metrics but kriging accuracy did not. Geostatistical abundance estimates show significant declines from 1990 to 2002. The observed relationship between changes in distribution and changes in abundance is suggestive of density-dependent habitat selection. Depth and distance from the Bay mouth were the most important predictors of mature female abundance. SPATIAL ECOLOGY OF BLUE CRAB (CALLINECTES SAPIDUS) IN CHESAPEAKE BAY

A Comparative Study of the Bacterial Flora of the Hemolymph of Callinectes sapidus
The bacterial flora of blue crabs (Callinectes sapid us) from Chesapeake Bay was examined. Hemolymph of normal, healthy blue crabs was found non-sterile, with total bacterial counts ranging from <100 to >3.0 x 10 5 on a seawater-based medium and 0 to >10 5 on Standard Methods Agar. Counts of 0-10 3 were observed on TCBS agar. Vibrio spp., including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, were the major taxono...
متن کاملA Model for the Population of the Blue Crab in the Chesapeake Bay
We model the population of the Blue Crab in the Chesapeake Bay by using differential equations. Blue crabs are inherently cannibalistic of juveniles, while also in competition with juvenile blue crabs for resources. These differential equations describe the intraguild predation consistent in the blue crab food web, as well as the cannibalistic nature of the blue crab. We introduce an aging and ...
متن کاملAn evaluation of the synchronization in the dynamics of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) populations in the western Atlantic
Interannual variability in the abundances of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in populations along the U.S. east coast is well documented, but the mechanisms driving these fluctuations remain poorly understood. Using principal component analysis and dynamic factor analysis we quantified the patterns in variability and the degree of synchrony among blue crab populations along the U.S. east coast ...
متن کاملDemographic Assessment of the Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) in Chesapeake Bay Using Extractable Lipofuscins as Age Markers
The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) plays an important economic and ecological role in estuaries and coastal habitats from the Gulf of Mexico to the east coast of North America, but demographic assessments are limited by length-based methods. We applied an alternative aging method using bio chemical measures of metabolic byprod ucts (lipofuscins) sequestered in the neural tissue of eyestalks ...
متن کاملMatrix-Based Modeling of Blue Crab Population Dynamics with Applications to the Chesapeake Bay
Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) plays an important ecological and economic role in estuaries from South America to New England. It supports a large commercial fishery in the United States with approximately one third of the landings taken from Chesapeake Bay. I developed a stage-based matrix model of the blue crab population to address three key questions: What is the ability of blue crab popul...
